Importance of ABCs of bike safety

So there I am - smiling as the hot sun beat on my back, feeling the wind roaring in my ears and cooling my face on a glorious sunny Bay Area day. I was happily pedaling along reaching mile 47 of my bike ride from San Francisco to Mountain View with some friends when the unexpected happened! I felt my left foot wobblying around for a minute, but dismissed it as just a need to tighten my cleats to my shoe. Well... I never got to check on it later because suddenly MY FOOT, PEDAL, AND CRANK ALL DETACHED FROM MY BIKE! Whaaaaat?!? Yeah! Uh huh! I know! After getting over the initial shock and horror of what just happened, I saw how comical the situation looked to my friends - me pedaling along with just one foot. I wasn't even sure how I was going to come to a stop since I couldn't land on my left foot with the crank still attached to it. Eventually (after trying not to fall off because I was laughing so hard) I gingerly come to a slow stop, unclipped my right foot and kind of slid off my seat and landed on my right side. We were able to reattach the crank after a bit of detective work.

The crank is supposed to be attached to the rest of the bike like this...

... instead, my shoe was attached to the crank, but the crank not attached to bike...

Lesson learned! For all you bikers out there here's a video clip on the ABC's of bicycle safety.
